TASK 2:  Some people think that all entertainment TV programmes should educate people about the importance of social issues. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Should every programme on TV be educational on social issues? Absolutely not! Entertainment is for entertaining, not for raising people’s awareness. Doing this would surely scare away a myriad of viewers.

Sometimes we just have to relax! We work hard all day to support our lifestyle, and then we have personal issues to deal with. Therefore, relaxation time is vital, and a lot of people like to switch on the TV for some good old mindless entertainment to help them wind down. If show producers added important messages, the audience would simply turn off the TV and watch something else, possibly YouTube or play a game.

This response would lower viewership for TV channels which would lead to advertisers quickly moving their budgets to other platforms and perhaps causing the collapse of TV channels. People who need to relax will always be able to find an alternative, so it’s pointless to even try such a poorly thought-out idea.

It is undeniable that people do need education on social issues. However, this has to be done elsewhere, perhaps a more appropriate medium, which could be a portal to notices about and solutions to the social problems that people face from time to time.

In sum, people can not be forced to learn about social issues. Only at the right time, at the right place, and in the right way will they become actively aware of such topics. Even Greta Thunberg could see this.
