However, this higher admission rate may simply reflect the competitiveness of Early Action applicants rather than suggesting that applying early gives you a special advantage.

A good rule of thumb is: only apply early if you have a strong competitive advantage and are prepared with your application. Otherwise, apply by the regular deadline to give yourself time to prepare your application. Remember, your top priority should always be to submit the best application you can.

The most common deadline for Early Action is November 1 and November 15. (This part of the sentence is a repeat of the waiting for results section)

As with a regular decision, your application may be accepted or rejected. But there is a third option: deferred. This means your application will be placed in the regular decision pool for review in February or March.

If your application is delayed but you are still very interested in the school, you can send in your mid-year grades or test scores if they will help your application. You can also call the admissions office to see if there is anything you can send in to increase your chances of admission.

For the most part, you can apply Early Action to as many colleges as you want; however, some schools that offer limited or single-choice Early Action will not be able to apply Early Action anywhere else. (Note that you can still apply regular decision elsewhere.) Schools with limited Early Action policies include Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale.

2. Some notes about Early Action

Early Action is a method that can convey your enthusiasm and desire to the school's Admissions Representative and is like a commitment from you to definitely attend that school.

Furthermore, schools tend to accept more applicants through Early Action than those who apply through Regular Decision, as student acceptance rates will typically be higher (the percentage of students who accept a school's offer of admission).

Because early applicants are more likely to be serious about attending that school, they are more likely to accept their offer. And the more students who accept their offer, the higher the school's acceptance rate. And the higher the school's acceptance rate, the easier it is to predict admissions and avoid waiting lists.

Also, applicants tend to be among the strongest candidates, so schools don't have to waste time waiting for resubmission of grades or SAT/ACT scores.

3. Timeline for EA Application

If you want to get an edge with Early Action, you'll need to start planning for college a few months earlier than the Regular Decision deadline (either way, you'll benefit from preparing early!).

The elements that require special planning to complete early are the SAT/ACT, letters of recommendation, and personal essay. In the fall, you will also need to send your transcript request form to the guidance office and set aside time to fill out the school's Common Application or Individual Application.

Step 1: Take the SAT / ACT

For the SAT/ACT, you should leave yourself plenty of time to take the SAT/ACT. Since most students tend to retake the SAT/ACT to improve their scores, your last chance to take the ACT is September if you want to qualify for Early Action, while your last chance to take the SAT is October.

Since senior year is busy and you need time to review your SAT/ACT scores before submitting them, taking the SAT/ACT early will give you a big advantage when it comes to EA application season. It is recommended that you take the first SAT/ACT in the fall of your junior year, again in the spring of your junior year, and a third time (if needed) in the summer or fall of your junior year.

Step 2: Request a letter of recommendation

Regarding letters of recommendation, give your teachers and/or counselor at least one month to write a letter of recommendation. This means you should ask your teachers/counselors by October 1 of your senior year.

It might also be a good idea to ask at the end of your school year, as these teachers will remember you most clearly at this time. They will likely help you look better on your college applications!

Step 3: Plan and Start Writing Your College Essay

Just like with letters of recommendation, it's a good idea to spend some time planning your personal statement and any supplemental essays. It's recommended that you do this over the summer. Even reading essay prompts can help you start brainstorming potential topics.

You can then spend several months drafting, getting feedback, and revising your essay until it's ready to submit.

Step 4: Complete your application

Finally, in September and October, you can complete the rest of your application, review all the information, and write about your extracurricular activities in a compelling way.

If you are planning to study abroad and especially apply for a scholarship, let ETEST help you design a free itinerary specifically for you through the course. AMP(Admission Mentoring Program) – writing scholarship essays.
