The development of the horse from 40 million years ago is <\/span>illustrated<\/b><\/span> in the given diagram. Overall, the species<\/span><\/strong> has more than doubled in size and especially the foot has completely changed its structure from being five toed to having a <\/span>hoof<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The foot itself has <\/span>evolved<\/b> dramatically<\/b><\/span> from 40 million years ago being <\/span>multi-toed<\/b><\/span>, <\/span>not dissimilar<\/b><\/span> big <\/span>a primates hand<\/b><\/span> perhaps, to having three toes 10 million years later, with the central one being <\/span>slightly reminiscent<\/b><\/span> of a modern hoof, though much smaller. Then only minor changes had happened up to 15 million years back before the foot became the hoof we are so familiar with, <\/span>consisting of<\/b><\/span> a single rounded protective outer bone structure with a <\/span>radically<\/b><\/span> different lower leg bone arrangement, now having only 4 bones, which supports the greatly increased <\/span>load<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although <\/span>the primitive<\/strong><\/span> Eohippus horse is quite small in size, the rest of the features, <\/span>which include the tail, neck and head, (with the exceptions of the foot and the presence of a <\/span>light fur covering<\/b><\/span>) are quite familiar to us.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
