1. What is Cambridge Checkpoint?
Cambridge Checkpoint exams were created and designed to assess students at the end of Primary and Secondary School. The exam consists of 3 subjects: English as a Second Language, Mathematics and Science entirely in English, helping to provide an internationally valid assessment of students' abilities before moving on to the next level of education and is valid forever.
Cambridge Checkpoint Cambridge Checkpoint Primary is for primary school (students take the exam at the end of grade 6 - in Vietnam, it is the end of grade 5) and Cambridge Checkpoint Secondary is for secondary school (students take the exam at the end of grade 9). The exam is held twice a year, in May and October.
After completing the test, each student will receive 2 analysis reports on:
- Test scores for the entire course
- Test scores for each key topic/skill
- List of questions (and sub-topics/skills) that specifically indicate student strengths and weaknesses
- Notice of academic achievement.

2. Cambridge Checkpoint exam structure
The Cambridge examination programme tests knowledge and prepares students for entry to higher education with important qualifications.
Through this, students gradually form and develop language skills, scientific knowledge and mathematics equivalent to students in developed countries. Get used to self-study and build confidence as well as independent working skills.
2.1. English subject
The ESL (English as a Second Language) subject will consist of 3 parts: Listening, Reading & Usage – and Writing.
a. For Cambridge Primary Checkpoint:
- Reading & Usage – Paper 1: consists of 5 parts with 30 questions in multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank format in 40 minutes.
- Writing – Paper 2: consists of 3 parts with 7 questions. Part 1 is 5 vocabulary questions, Part 2 is sending a feedback email and Part 3 is telling a story on a suggested topic with a time limit of 40 minutes.
- Listening – Paper 3: consists of 4 parts with 20 multiple choice questions and listening to fill in the blanks within 25 minutes.

b. For Cambridge Secondary Checkpoint:
- Reading & Usage – Paper 1: consists of 5 parts with 45 questions presented in multiple choice and fill-in-the-blank format in 50 minutes.
- Writing – Paper 2: consists of 3 parts with 7 questions. Part 1 is 5 vocabulary questions, Part 2 is sending an email and Part 3 is writing an essay expressing personal opinions with a total time of 50 minutes.
- Listening – Paper 3: consists of 5 parts with 30 multiple choice questions and listening to fill in the blanks in 45 minutes.
The knowledge and skills used in English subject Cambridge Checkpoint:
- Understand and know how to apply verb phrases, nouns, adjectives, and adverbs correctly in sentences
- Rich vocabulary for topics such as sports, family, friends and entertainment…
- Listen and make inferences, understanding implied meaning in talks on familiar topics.
- Listen to detailed information
- Infer and understand opinions, attitudes, and implications
- Recognize details/information expressed differently
- Write/reply to a short, simple personal letter to thank, apologize, ask how you are, give news, accept or decline an invitation
- Write a short story (no more than 100 words) on the suggested topic
2.2. Mathematics
Many parents often think that the math program in international schools is lighter and easier than the math program in the primary and secondary school programs of the Ministry of Education, however this is completely incorrect.
When studying the Cambridge program, students are introduced to and learn about the 5 main elements of mathematics such as arithmetic/algebra, geometry, measurement, data processing, problem solving... Thereby helping students form and practice mathematical thinking such as understanding and applying appropriate techniques or strategies to solve problems.
- For Cambridge Primary Checkpoint: consists of 2 parts (papers), including 28 questions without calculator (45 minutes) and 30 questions with calculator (45 minutes).
- For Cambridge Secondary Checkpoint: consists of 2 parts (papers), including 25 questions without calculator (1 hour) and 24 questions with calculator (1 hour).
2.3. Science
Questions in Science in Cambridge Checkpoint The test consists of 3 subjects: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The test consists of 2 parts (papers) lasting 45 minutes for Primary Checkpoint. In which, Physics will be knowledge about force and motion, light, electricity and magnetism, sound, Earth.
Chemistry is questions about matter, changes of matter, states of matter. Biology exam content is about plants, animals, human body.
