Difference between IELTS on paper and computer

Number of candidates in an exam room

The paper-based IELTS test usually has 100-150 candidates in an exam room, while the computer-based test only has about 30-50 candidates, creating a quieter space.

Exam location

Paper-based IELTS tests are usually held in large halls of universities, hotels, educational centers, etc., while computer-based tests take place in small labs and computer centers that are designed to be more modern and convenient.

Exam room atmosphere

Paper-based IELTS test rooms are usually air-conditioned and spacious, creating a sense of tension, while computer-based IELTS test rooms are warmer and have partitions between candidates.

Tools provided

Candidates taking the paper-based test will be given the test paper, an answer sheet, and a pencil to fill in their answers on the answer sheet. Transferring answers from the scratch sheet to the official answer sheet requires candidates to be quick and accurate.

With the IELTS test on computer, candidates will directly enter their answers into the corresponding boxes on the screen, saving time and reducing handwriting errors.

Disadvantages

• You have to count the number of words in your article yourself, which is time-consuming and difficult to ensure that your article meets the requirements.

• With a large number of candidates, the ability to concentrate is easily reduced due to the large and crowded exam space.

• Smaller exam rooms equipped with headphones help you concentrate and minimize distractions from your surroundings.
• Test results are usually returned within 3-5 days, allowing you to receive your results sooner and know your score quickly.
• The number of words in the Writing test will be displayed on the screen, helping you easily track and ensure you do not exceed the specified number of words.
• Easily edit article content and highlight important passages with just one click, helping to improve article quality.
• You can adjust the headphone volume as you like to ensure clear and suitable sound.

Disadvantages

• Looking at a computer screen continuously for 3 hours will put pressure and fatigue on your eyes.
• You are not allowed to draw diagrams or write by hand in the Writing section, which can be a hindrance if you are used to this method.
• There is no additional 10 minutes at the end to transfer answers to the answer sheet as in paper-based exams, reducing checking and correction time.
• You will need basic computer skills such as copying, pasting, highlighting text and typing, which can slow down your test if you are not familiar with using a computer.
• There are not many opportunities to practice IELTS test preparation on a computer, which may make you feel uncomfortable when taking the test.
