How to optimize IELTS Writing score from Task achievement criteria

Step 1: Carefully analyze the assignment requirements

Clearly define the type of question (chart, process, table) for accurate analysis. Identify important keywords, appearing subjects and evaluation criteria. Pay attention to prominent trends such as highs, lows or notable changes.

For example:

The bar chart below shows the number of tourists visiting four different countries from 2010 to 2020. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

  • Identify the topic format: This is a bar chart that compares tourist numbers over the years.
  • Identify keywords: “tourist arrivals,” “4 countries,” “2010-2020.”
  • Identify the subject: 4 countries (country A, B, C, D).
  • Featured trends: Which countries have the highest number of visitors? Which countries have seen a sharp decrease or increase? Are there any countries that have maintained a steady number of visitors?
  • Highest/Lowest Index: Which country had the highest number of visitors in 2020? Which country had the lowest number of visitors in 2010?

Step 2: Outline the article

The article should have a clear structure:

  • Introduction: Paraphrase the question, summarize in 1 sentence.
  • Overview: Summarize key points or trends in 1-2 sentences, without detailed data.
  • Body: Analyze data in detail according to increasing or decreasing trends, each segment should be demonstrated with specific figures.

Step 3: Write the article

Based on the outline, complete the article with objective and accurate information. Avoid rambling or including personal opinions.

Some common Task achievement errors in IELTS Writing

Only partially meets the requirements of the assignment

A common mistake is not fully answering the question's requirements.

For example, with the question “Discuss both views and give your opinion,” Many candidates only focus on analyzing one point of view and ignore the other or do not give their personal opinion.

For example:

If the question asks “Some people think that technology has made life easier, while others believe it has made life more difficult. Discuss both views and give your opinion,” You need to state both the advantages and disadvantages of the technology, and then give your opinion.

The article structure is unclear.

An essay that is not clearly structured will reduce the examiner’s ability to understand it. Make sure your essay has a clear Introduction, Body and Conclusion. Each section should be logically connected to each other, making the essay coherent and easy to follow.

Lack of comparison and analysis of data

A common mistake in Writing Task 1 is to simply list numbers without analyzing or comparing key figures. To score high, you need to point out differences between data and highlight key trends rather than just stating numbers in a formulaic manner.

For example:

If the chart shows that the number of Internet users in country A is 80% and in country B is 40%, you should not just list the two numbers but compare them: “The number of Internet users in country A is twice as high as in country B.” with country B, showing a significant difference in the level of technology access.”

Task Achievement is an important criterion in the IELTS Writing test, assessing the ability to fully meet the requirements of the topic and develop ideas clearly and accurately. To optimize the score in this criterion, candidates need to master how to analyze the topic, outline appropriately, and present the writing coherently and clearly.
