Studying in Canada is one of the most prominent study abroad destinations in the world. Not only is the living environment convenient and modern, but Canada is also one of the places with the most developed academic background in the world. Study in Canada through the SDS study abroad program
Student Direct Stream (SDS) is an expedited study permit processing program for those applying to study in Canada at a recognized Canadian university. Postsecondary designation (DLI), also known as universities that are authorized to accept international students. SDS is available to legal residents of the following countries:
- China
- India
- Morocco
- Pakistan
- Philippines
- Senegal
- Vietnam
To be eligible for Canada SDS study, applicants must meet specific requirements by providing prior documentation (information can be found below).

All about studying in Canada SDS
Some international students may be able to get a Canadian study visa faster by using the Canada SDS study program. IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) processes most SDS study applications within 20 business days if the applicant meets all SDS program requirements.
Only electronically submitted student applications are eligible for SDS processing. All paper applications are processed according to the regular Canadian student application process and will be subject to associated administrative processing times.
Foreign nationals who have met the eligibility requirements for SDS processing must still comply with all other procedural requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR).
SDS Program Standards
Applicants must include the following documents to be eligible for SDS processing:
1. Evidence of a valid language test result, completed within 2 years of the date the SDS application is received, demonstrating one of the following:
i. IELTS score (in English) of 6.0 or higher for each language skill: listening, reading, writing and speaking
ii. a TEF score (in French) equivalent to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score of at least 7 in each ability: speaking at least 310, listening 249, reading 207 and writing 310
2. Proof of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAN$10,000 or more from any bank insured by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) or any bank listed on the IRCC SDS website
GIC must meet the following criteria:
i. Once the GIC has been purchased, the bank provides a confirmation letter, GIC certificate, Investment Instruction Confirmation or Investment Balance Confirmation to the applicant.
ii. The bank holds the funds in an investment or student account and is not accessible for release to the applicant until the applicant arrives in Canada.
iii. Upon entry into Canada, the bank must verify the customer's identity before disbursing funds to the study permit holder.
iv. Applicants receive an initial disbursement upon identification, and the remaining amount is disbursed monthly or bi-monthly over a period of 10 to 12 months.
3. Proof of full payment of tuition fees for the applicant's first year of study
This could be in the following form:
i. receipt from DLI
ii. Official letter from DLI confirming tuition payment
iii. Bank receipt showing tuition fees have been paid to DLI
iv. proof that the tuition amount has been deposited into an account held at DLI for payment of tuition at a later date
v. Letter of acceptance from a post-secondary DLI
4. Most recent high school or post-secondary transcript
5. Proof of completion of medical examination by a qualified physician for the applicant
i. people who have lived or travelled for 6 months in the designated countries or territories in the year before coming to Canada
ii. Fields of study that require prior medical examination results
Note: The medical examination confirmation may be a printed information sheet, if the physician uses eMedical or the Prepaid Medical Report form [IMM 1017B].
In addition to the above criteria, applicants for SDS processing must include the following documents as part of their electronic application (e-application):
- Application for Study Permit (if foreign student)
- Family information form (if applicable)
- Appendix 1 – Application for Temporary Visa (if any)
- Marriage certificate or certificate or Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union (if applicable)
- Use the Representative form [ (if available)
- A Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) or letter of approval from the Ministry of Immigration, de la Diversité et de l'Inclusion (MIDI) for a CAQ for applicants to Quebec.
- Pay the application processing fee and pay the biometric processing fee (if applicable)
- Proof of Identity (ID)
- Copy of the applicant's passport information and biographical data page
- Any additional documents as directed by the visa office for the applicant's region

Note: In most cases, applicants are required to submit biometrics. Once an applicant has submitted a complete application, including payment of the application and biometric processing fee (if applicable), they will be sent a biometric instruction letter (BIL), which contains instructions on how to submit their biometrics.
Officers may also request additional documentation from applicants at any time to make a decision on their application to study in Canada.
Officers must be sure that applicants are bona fide and will leave Canada at the end of their authorized stay.
