International Year One Program in Mathematics with Accounting, Economics, Finance or Management

This programme gives you the opportunity to choose from four major options, meaning you can tailor your course to suit you and your learning goals.

What is International Year One (IYO)?

Designed in partnership with the prestigious University of Exeter, the International Year One programme allows students to enter the second year of a specialist undergraduate degree. Students will not only improve their subject knowledge and English language skills, but also develop important study and research skills to ensure they are fully prepared for university study. Students will be assessed through examinations and assignments. These may include written assignments, practical work, group and individual research projects, presentations or problem-solving exercises.

Key Information

Admission: Monday, September 17, 2018 – Friday, June 7, 2019

Course Length: 3 terms, equivalent to 9 months

Number of class hours: 20-22 hours/week

Minimum age: 16 years of age or older (all students must be 17 years of age by the end of the first semester)

Admission requirements: Successful completion of A-levels, or first year university with a good GPA or equivalent. Grade B in Mathematics A-level.

English language entry requirements: IELTS 6.0 (minimum 5.5 and no less than 5.0 in each sub-skill) or equivalent. If you do not meet the minimum English language requirements, you should enrol on INTO's Academic English course.

Certification: Successful completion of the IYO programme will result in students receiving a Certificate of Higher Education (FHEQ Level 4) from the University of Exeter.

While studying at INTO Exeter, you will live with other students in residential accommodation or with a carefully selected local family – the choice is yours!

INTO’s on-campus accommodation is just a 15-minute walk from the INTO Centre, with a shop and coffee shop. The homestay option gives you the chance to experience local British life. You’ll have your own room in a carefully selected host’s home, sharing mealtimes and living space.

Main Modules

English skills at university level

Develop language skills for mathematics and business studies. This module aims to improve the ability to read complex academic texts and evaluate relevant information; produce written assignments; and develop fluency and confidence in discussions and presentations.

Mathematical method

Develop skills and techniques in calculus, geometry and algebra, including practical methods and problem solving, differential and integral analysis, fundamentals of vector and matrix algebra.

Mathematical structure

Introduction to Mathematics: Students will study the building blocks of mathematics, including important properties of standard number systems, vector spaces, and the abstract definition of a group.

Specialized Module

Marketing Principles

Students will look to provide a consumer-oriented perspective on marketing, explore social and psychological factors in strategic marketing planning, marketing and consumption in the context of globalization, and the ethics of marketing activities as they relate to environmental sustainability.

Introduction to Financial Accounting

Learn about key financial statements, from source documents through published financial statements, as well as UK financial reporting, and how to interpret published accounting information.

Introduction to Management Accounting

This module introduces students to basic cost accounting processes, long-term and short-term decision making techniques, and evaluating the outcomes of different scenarios using calculations to make sound recommendations.

Management Concepts and Practices

Build knowledge of management concepts, organization and related theories, examine the formulation and implementation of business strategy, and explain key management issues in marketing, human resource management and operations.

Microeconomics 1

Learn important tools for conducting microeconomic analysis, including the theory of consumption and production, risk and uncertainty, market power and failure, and game theory.
