Trinh Huynh, from Vietnam, enrolled in UAB’s Master of Public Health, shares her decision to pursue this humanistic major. “I found my internship through a network of other public health professionals who were practicing in maternal and child health. I talked to them about their projects and work environments, and eventually found an internship with the Help Me Grow program at UnitedWay of Alabama.”
Trinh’s day-to-day role as an intern includes taking referrals from healthcare providers regarding each child’s development and behavior, and reaching out to families to discuss how Help Me Grow and community-based support services can help. “I become a link between families in need and resources in the community,” Trinh says. “Early childhood plays a critical role in a child’s life success, and I hope it’s something I can continue to do as a career in the future.”
Trinh also feels that what she learned in the INTO UAB Pathway program has helped her improve a lot during her internship. “My English classes have made me feel more confident in my communication skills. And this has helped me have more conversations with the families I work with and report to my supervisor. I can definitely get hands-on experience in this field and I absolutely love what I do.” “With the invaluable experience that comes from the UAB School of Public Health through the dedicated faculty and my internship program, I now have the knowledge to be successful in the field of Maternal and Child Health,” Trinh shared.
