Summary of theory of simple past tense

Simple past tense (past simple tense) is used to describe an action or event that happened and ended at a certain time in the past. When learning about tenses in English, the past simple tense is one of the important basic tenses that you need to master.

For example:

  • She left her keys on the table before she departed.
  • We hosted a dinner party for our friends last weekend.

Simple past tense formula in English

She was at home all day.

wasn't = wasn't

weren't = weren't

For example:

did not = didn't

How to use the past simple tense – Past Simple 

Here are some uses of the past simple tense and accompanying examples:

  • Describes an action that happened at a specific time in the past.

Example: He broke his leg in April.

  • Describes an action that was repeated regularly in the past. 

Example: She went jogging in the park every Saturday morning.

  • Expresses a series of actions that took place consecutively in the past.

For example: He completed the project, submitted it, and received positive feedback.

  • Expresses an action that interrupts an ongoing action in the past.

Example: He was writing an email when his computer suddenly crashed.

  • Used in type II conditional sentences. 

Example: If the weather wasn't too cold, we would go swimming.

  • Used in sentences expressing unrealistic wishes.

For example: I wish I were in Hawaii right now.

  • Used to describe a historical event.

For example: Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. (Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.)

  • Expresses when an action clearly occurs at a specific time, even if the time is not mentioned.

For example: The bus was 15 minutes late.

  • Used in structure: 
  • It's + (high) time + S + Ved.
  • It + is + period of time + since + Past tense.

For example: 

  • It's high time she apologized for her behavior.
  • It is three weeks since she moved to her new apartment.
  • The question can be in the present simple or present perfect with the answer in the past.

For example:

Q: Have you ever met a famous person?

A: Yes, I met a famous actor at a party last year.

Signs to recognize the simple past tense

In the simple past tense sentences, the following adverbs of time are used:

  • Yesterday: Yesterday
  • Last month: Last month
  • Last year: Last year
  • Last night: Last night
  • Last week: Last week
  • Ago: Ago
  • at, on, in… + past time
  • When + clause in the past simple tense

For example: 

  • I visited my uncle yesterday.
  • He started his job in 2010.
  • We ate dinner at 7 pm (We ate dinner at 7 pm.)
  • She learned to swim when she was young.
